Disappearing Dishes

November 7, 2007 · Leave a Comment

bahn cuonThanksgiving is really the only reason I have matching dishes. The first year I cooked I was more stressed about what we would eat off of than what we would eat. I finally found some plates at Cost Plus that seemed just right and I bought a dozen of them. They’re the perfect green, one that can be matched with pastels in spring, reds and greens at Christmas, and earth tones for Thanksgiving. They are rimless though, which makes them kind of hard to hold on to while washing them (yet another reason we should really have a dishwasher.) Several times they’ve slipped right out of my hands into the sink, and when I went through and culled the chipped ones last weekend I realized we are now down to eight intact plates. Unfortunately, Cost Plus has moved on to other colors, but I haven’t!

Hm. Now what? I wouldn’t mind mixing and matching patterns, but so far I’ve been unable to find anything that will look good . There are some plates on the Ikea website that look pretty familiar, but that means a trip to Portland. Not that a trip to Ikea is a bad thing. Actually I could use more wine glasses too. And I never have enough serving dishes. And we could also go to Trader Joe’s. Is it crazy to drive almost 200 miles to buy dishes?

I’m glad I have two bazillion forks at least. No wonder people buy white dishes.
